What is a baton used for?
A baton is a tool used by primarily orchestral conductors. It is a stick that is designed to help enhance the gestures and movements of a conductor to make their directions clearer for the musicians they are conducting.
What is a conductor's baton made of?
Modern day batons are made of a variety of materials. Generally, the shaft is made of lightweight wood, fibreglass or carbon fibre. The grip, also called the "bulb" can be made from almost any wood or material such as cork, oak, walnut, rosewood, resin etc. sometimes mixed together to be more visually appealing.
How do I choose the correct baton for me?
There are a few factors to consider when choosing a baton. The first is to consider what length of the baton to buy, the general recommendation is to aim for approximately the length of your forearm. Next is to consider weight/balance and size. The baton should be balanced in a way that it feels comfortable when conducting and the grip or "bulb" should fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. There is a large variety of bulb sizes and shapes available for batons.
What if I can't find my perfect baton from what you stock?
There are quite a few models that we do not actively stock in-store, but if you find a model that you would like, we are more than happy to special order in more. A lot of baton manufacturers also have the option of customisable batons, so no matter what we will help you find the best option for you.
