Who is Simply for Strings?

  • Simply for Strings is an Australian owned and operated, Brisbane based string instrument specialist store. The company was founded in 2006 by directors Anna Andriolo and Toby Cumpstay. Simply for Strings specialises in high quality violins, violas, celli and double basses, bows, strings, accessories, sheet music and instrument repairs. We are constantly working towards meeting teachers needs, and have a specialised school manager Teegan Dowdell, who is able to help your school meet its musical potential. We pride ourselves on exceptional customer hospitality, and our team of professional musicians, teachers and performers can’t wait to help you.

Where are you based?

  • Simply for Strings is based at 78 Enoggera Terrace, Red Hill. Marked by its original stained glass windows, white trimmed arched doorways and spectacular showroom, our Old Church has been host to a variety of businesses over the years; a Greek restaurant, chair manufacturer and a booking agency. The Old Church is now home to a world of music. We are open 9-5 Monday to Saturday, with no appointments necessary. We are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Do you play a role in the community?

  • Simply for Strings is very committed to promoting music making in all of its forms. Our beautiful building plays host to numerous workshops and special events. We support a variety of school programs with donations and prizes for P&C events and raffles, and offer sponsorship to Queensland’s Youth Orchestra. We support local and regional teachers by offering teacher discounts on a variety of sheet music and accessories, and keeping teachers up to date with the latest products and services via our Educational Herald. We also support regional string teachers and performers with yearly visits to locations such as Mount Isa, Townsville and Victoria.
Simply for Strings now oversees its own instrument donation program. Our aim is to provide families, schools, and organisations in need with string instruments. Here at Simply for Strings, we believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to experience the gift of music. With the incredible support of our local community and the Australian public, we are trying to make this belief a reality. If you would like to get involved by donating an instrument or by nominating someone to receive an instrument, please get in touch via phone (07 3368 3666) or email

You may choose between a refund, exchange or credit note where goods are faulty, have been wrongly described, are different from the sample shown to you or do not do what they are supposed to.

Do you offer an instrument and bow repairs service?

  • Simply for Strings' very own luthier offers high-quality repair work at a competitive price. We are able to assess and quote your repair in-store before it is sent to one of our luthiers.

Can I just buy a bridge and put it on myself?

  • Bridges are supplied to the market as 'blanks' and need to be specially fitted and carved for the instrument they belong to. Simply for Strings offers this service at a very competitive price, and can be completed in a reasonable time frame.

Some of my varnish has been removed, can I just revarnish it?

  • The varnish on your instrument is incredibly unique – after construction, instruments are left to dry for a number of weeks. Not only does this allow for your instrument’s seams to dry properly and settle, but this allows for the natural colours and texture of the materials used to become more pronounced. Varnishes are also created during this drying time, and have a variety of ingredients to achieve the desired effect. Each luthier has their own preference when it comes to varnish, and a kaleidoscope of different oils, resins and colouring matter are used on every instrument. Normal furniture varnishes are far too damaging for your precious musical instrument. Embrace the character marks, and be sure to continue cleaning and looking after your musical instrument.

Can you change my instrument’s strings for me?

  • We offer a free string instalment with any strings purchased from Simply for Strings. Fitting generally takes between 5-10mins and can usually be done on the spot at time of purchase by one of our friendly staff.

Do you offer violin lessons at Simply for Strings?

  • We do not offer lessons held at Simply for Strings but are happy to recommend any teachers we know of in your area.

  • Simply for Strings specialises in violins, violas, celli and double basses. There is a number of excellent guitar stores nearby, located in Paddington and Red Hill.
