His first concert tour in 1859 made him an international star at 15, and he remained a preeminent violinist for nearly half a century. Works were dedicated to him by Bruch and Saint-Saëns, and even by the staid and sober violinist\/composer Joseph Joachim, who was virtually his opposite musically and temperamentally.
