What is ABRSM?
The ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) is an examination board and based in London, England, which provides examinations in music at centres around the world.
Why should I do an ABRSM exam?
You don't have to enrol in an ABRSM exam in order to use the ABRSM books during your learning journey. For some players, having a clearly defined goal and upcoming exam can be a powerful motivating force. ABRSM provide graded music exams, assessments and diplomas. An ABRSM grade has a worldwide currency and exams are designed to motivate learners at all levels and ages, providing realistic goals and tangible rewards for their achievements. If you're not sure whether an exam would be right for you, have a chat with your teacher.
Can I choose other sheet music for my ABRSM exam?
Each ABRSM book includes a selection of repertoire, so you're able to complete exams. ABRSM believe in the importance of all-round musicianship and this forms the basis of their exams. To become an all-round musician students need a range of interlocking skills – in performance, technique, notation, and listening and musical perception – as well as knowledge, understanding and creativity. These are the things assessed in ABRSM exams. If you're not sure whether or not your repertoire is suitable, discuss with your teacher or contact ABRSM.
