Should I buy a wood or carbon fibre viola bow?
If you prioritise traditional feel and tone, a wood bow (usually pernambuco) is a great choice. If you want durability and stability in changing conditions, a carbon fibre bow is an excellent alternative. Both can perform beautifully depending on your needs.
How do I know if my viola bow needs a rehair?
There are a few signs to tell if your bow needs a rehair: 1. Missing a lot of hair. 2. Rosin isn't taking to the hair anymore. 3. Hair has stretched and no longer tightens properly. All of these issues will affect your tone, and a rehair will help you play and sound your best again.
What is the right weight for a viola bow?
A full-size viola bow usually weighs 67–64 g, with 58–62 g ideal for most players. More importantly, the right bow should feel balanced, comfortable, and responsive, so be sure to try a few when choosing your next bow!
How often should I rosin my viola bow?
Rosin should be applied as needed, usually every 1-2 practice sessions. Too little rosin can make your sound weak and bow feel slippery. Too much rosin creates excess rosin dust and a scratchy sound. Aim to use just enough rosin to produce a smooth, clear sound.
Does a round or octagonal bow stick play better?
There's no universal "better" between round and octagonal. Generally, round sticks are softer and more flexible, while octagonal sticks are stronger. The quality of the timber and overall playability must also be considered. Choosing a bow is very personal, so try different options to find what feels right for you.
