Celebrating 20 Years of Simply for Strings

A look back at the moments, memories, and musicians who made it all possible.

Simply for Strings has become an iconic destination for string musicians, teachers, students, and families across Australia. But at the very heart of it all is Founder and Director, Anna Andriolo, whose passion for music education and community has shaped the business from the very beginning.

As we celebrate 20 years of Simply for Strings, we’re reflecting on the journey that transformed a small mobile business into one of Australia’s most recognised string instrument stores.

What began in 2005 in Anna’s home quickly grew into something much bigger. Travelling in a trusty Toyota Yaris filled with instruments, bows, and sheet music, Anna visited schools and communities across Queensland to provide access to quality string instruments and accessories. Those early years on the road built the foundation of the Simply for Strings philosophy: education, care, and genuine support for every musician’s journey.

As our community grew, so did the dream. On the 17th of November, 2007, Simply for Strings officially opened the doors to its now-iconic home in the Old Church at Red Hill. More than just a retail store, the space became a creative hub for the string community. A place where musicians could learn, connect, be inspired, and feel at home.

Over the past two decades, Simply for Strings has continued to evolve while staying true to Anna’s original vision. From launching initiatives like String Garden and Behind the Sound, to supporting access to music through our Donation Program, community has always remained at the centre of everything we do.

Today, Simply for Strings continues to support musicians Australia-wide. Our team of professional musicians, educators, luthiers, and passionate string specialists are here to assist at every stage of the musical journey, just as Anna set out to do 20 years ago.

And while much has changed since those early days on the road, one thing remains the same: a deep belief in the power of music, community, and helping people fall in love with playing.

Our Journey So Far

2005

Where It All Began

2005

Where It All Began

Simply for Strings was founded in 2005 by friends Anna and Toby. In the very early days, Anna’s home in Wavell Heights became the original base of operations, filled with string instruments, accessories, and other musical goodies. Her house was transformed into a welcoming world of strings where customers could drop in, trial instruments, and receive personal guidance. We welcomed many teachers, students, and families through her front door, building the beginnings of the Simply for Strings community.

When Anna and Toby were not working from her home, they were on the road in the trusty Toyota Yaris, packed with instruments and supplies. The passionate pair would drive from town to town across Queensland to sell string instruments and help educate students, parents and teachers in their homes and schools.

Our First Trip To Mount Isa

Our First Trip To Mount Isa

In 2006, we took our first trip to Mount Isa. Working closely with local teachers, including our dear friend Yvonne Moore, we helped students access quality instruments set up to withstand the unique conditions of North West Queensland.

Our support also extended to students learning remotely through Mount Isa School of the Air and Longreach School of Distance Education. For young musicians living on remote properties, being able to manage their own instrument was especially important. We fitted instruments with geared tuning pegs, helping students tune independently from an early age, even when their teacher was hundreds of kilometres away.

That first trip was the beginning of a wonderful relationship with the Mount Isa community that has continued over the years. We still make the trip north, most recently in 2024, when Jacqui and Danny visited Mount Isa to provide instrument repairs and servicing for local schools.

Setting Up Shop

Before too long, the little house in Wavell Heights was way too small. Instruments began to take over Anna’s home, and she found herself stepping over double basses in the kitchen. “We’ve got to find a bigger space for the business,” she said.

Incredibly, the beautiful old Presbyterian church on Enoggera Terrace came up for lease, and Anna jumped at the opportunity, knowing it was the perfect space for Simply for Strings to call home.

Friends and family rallied to help fit out the store. The space was given a fresh lick of paint, cello stands were built to replicate church pews, and our beautiful front counter was hand-made from Tasmanian blackwood salvaged from a family member’s property. Every detail was considered and personal. It was a labour of love, but oh so worth it.

Grand Opening

Grand Opening

On the 17th of November 2007, we proudly opened the doors to our new home, the Old Church. The shelves were filled and the walls lined with violins, violas, cellos, and double basses, ready to start the next chapter of Simply for Strings. Familiar faces from our early days came to celebrate alongside new customers and curious locals stepping inside for the very first time. Many neighbours commented on how special it was to hear the sound of string instruments drifting through the streets, bringing new life to the beautiful old building.

The Old Church became far more than a music store. It grew into a gathering place for Brisbane’s string community. A space filled with conversation, creativity, learning, and music. Teachers would stop in between lessons, students would spend hours trying instruments, and families would return time and time again as their musical journeys continued.

China Trip

2008

China Trip

In 2008, Anna travelled to Shanghai, China, to attend the world’s largest musical instrument trade fair. It was an exciting opportunity to explore violins, violas, cellos, double basses, bows and more from makers around the globe.

During the trip, Anna met with manufacturers, visited workshops, and spent time learning about the people and craftsmanship behind the instruments. Seeing the instruments firsthand provided a valuable opportunity to assess their quality, understand how they were made, and carefully consider which instruments would be the right fit for Australian musicians.

The experience shaped our approach to sourcing quality instruments. In the years that followed, Anna made several return trips to China, maintaining close relationships with manufacturers and visiting workshops in person to ensure the quality and consistency of our instruments remained at the standard our customers had come to expect.

Workshops and Events

Following the opening of our store, we were excited to expand beyond retail and began hosting workshops and events for our growing community of musicians and educators.

Brisbane has a vibrant community of string educators, many of whom are also composers creating their own beginner methods and string orchestra repertoire. From the early days, we have loved bringing people together to share ideas, learn, and be inspired.

Over the years, we have hosted events with local composers and educators including Stephen Chin, Loreta Fin, Timo Jarvela, Keith and Natalie Sharp, Anne Svendsen, and Neridah Oostenbroek, as well as international guests such as Jeremy Woolstenhulme and Thomas Gregory.

2009-2010

AMA Awards

By 2009, Simply for Strings was beginning to make its mark on the Australian music retail industry.

At the Australian Music Association (AMA) Awards, Simply for Strings was recognised as “Best Presented Retail Store” in 2009, celebrating the welcoming and inspiring environment we had created for musicians.

The following year brought even more recognition, with Simply for Strings receiving “Best Promotion Print” and “Best Retailer Website” at the 2010 awards. At a time when online shopping was still finding its feet, our website was becoming an important extension of the Simply for Strings experience, helping musicians access instruments, strings, accessories and advice beyond our store.

These awards were an exciting milestone in our early years!

Instrument Giving Program

2011

Instrument Giving Program

In 2011, following the devastation of Cyclone Yasi, Anna travelled through North Queensland and saw the impact on local communities firsthand. Among the many losses were school music programs, with some schools losing instruments and resources that had taken years to build.

Seeing the challenges these schools faced, we knew we had to do something to help. We reached out to our community and asked if they had instruments sitting unused at home that could be given a second life.

The response was incredible. Instruments began arriving from all over Australia, each with the potential to make a difference in a young musician's life. Our team carefully serviced and repaired every instrument before donating them to schools in need.

Since then, thousands of instruments have been donated to schools and community music programs, all thanks to the generosity of our customers and the wider string community.

2016

String Garden

2016

String Garden

In 2016, we launched the String Garden, bringing the magic of Simply for Strings beyond the walls of The Old Church and into the wider community.

Designed as an interactive pop-up experience, the String Garden invites children to see, touch, and play string instruments in a welcoming "secret garden" setting. Guided by our team of musicians and teachers, it gives young people the chance to connect with music in a hands-on way, often for the very first time.

Since then, the String Garden has become one of our most-loved community programs. We've presented it alongside the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva, and the Australian String Quartet, and taken it on the road to regional communities including Toowoomba, Charleville, Chinchilla, and Roma.

Behind the Sound

2017

Behind the Sound

Following the success of String Garden, we launched Behind the Sound the following year to share another side of the instrument world with our community.

While String Garden captured the imagination of children, Behind the Sound was created for adults and curious musicians who wanted to look deeper into the craft. It offers a close-up view of what happens behind the scenes in a luthier’s workshop.

The Simply for Strings team demonstrates and explains common luthier work, from instrument setup and maintenance through to sound post adjustment and sound optimisation.

Behind the Sound reveals the detail, care, and craftsmanship that goes into every instrument we work with, helping audiences better understand what shapes the sound they hear.

2018

National Recognition

2018

National Recognition

2018 was a milestone year for Simply for Strings, as we were honoured with two of Australia’s most prestigious retail awards. We were named "Small Retailer of the Year" by the National Retail Association and "Best Independent Retailer of the Year" by the Australian Retail Council.

For Anna, these awards were a proud moment that reflected the dedication, care, and hard work of the entire Simply for Strings team. From the workshop to the showroom, every team member played a part in building a business grounded in expertise, service, and a genuine love of music.

While the recognition was significant on a national level, it meant most to see the team acknowledged for the standard they set every day. It affirmed the commitment they bring to supporting musicians, educators, schools, and families across Australia, and the shared passion that continues to drive Simply for Strings forward.

2019

New On-site Workshop

2019

New On-site Workshop

In 2019, we expanded our workshop space with a full renovation and dedicated luthier fit-out, marking a major step forward for Simply for Strings. Prior to this, we had only a single bench space, and our luthiers often worked from their home studios while completing repairs and setups.

The new workshop brought everything together under one roof. It allowed our luthiers to work on-site alongside the rest of the team, creating a more connected and collaborative environment.

This expansion also made their expertise more accessible to our customers. It strengthened the link between our workshop, our team, and our community, and remains an important part of how we operate and support players today.

The Green Room

2020

The Green Room

In 2020, we undertook another renovation to reimagine how our space could better serve our customers. We moved our office and warehouse downstairs, creating more room in the showroom and transforming the former warehouse and office area into a dedicated appointment space.

This became The Green Room, a quieter, more considered environment filled with a curated collection of antique and European instruments and bows.

This dedicated space allowed us to expand our range of high-end instruments and bows, broadening our product offering and creating room for more unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

We continue to curate an exclusive collection of beautiful instruments in this space, each carefully selected and set up by our luthiers.

Support Act Donations

2021

Support Act Donations

Throughout 2020 and 2021, with the support of our wonderful community, we raised more than $7,000 for Support Act, Australia's music industry charity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Support Act provided emergency grants to musicians whose livelihoods had been heavily impacted by the loss of live performances.

As many members of the Simply for Strings team are also performing musicians, the effects of the pandemic were felt close to home. We saw friends, colleagues, teachers, and artists lose opportunities almost overnight, and we wanted to play a small part in supporting the wider music community through an incredibly difficult time.

The generosity of our customers helped us raise more than $7,000 for Support Act. At a time when so much of the music industry had come to a standstill, it was wonderful to see our community come together to support one another.

Concert Series

2022

Concert Series

In 2022, we were excited to welcome live music back to the Old Church with the launch of our in-store concert series. After years of uncertainty, it was a joy to once again fill the building with the sound of live performance and bring our community together.

Throughout the year, audiences enjoyed intimate performances from wonderful ensembles including Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, Luminescence, Tango Enigmatico, and more. Each concert offered a unique opportunity to experience incredible musicians in a warm, up-close setting.

These evenings reminded us that Simply for Strings has always been more than a music store. They were a chance to celebrate incredible musicians and share the joy of live music with our community.

Thomas Zweig (Larsen Strings) Visit

In 2024, we were delighted to welcome Thomas Zweig from Larsen Strings to Simply for Strings for a special series of educational events. Thomas shared his extensive knowledge of string design and manufacturing, offering a fascinating insight into the science, craftsmanship, and innovation behind one of the world's leading string makers.

Alongside the presentation, musicians were invited to book one-on-one sound optimisation appointments with Thomas. Together, they explored different string combinations to help each instrument perform at its very best.

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to build wonderful relationships with leading names in the international string industry. Visits like Thomas’s give us the opportunity to share those relationships with our community, bringing world-class knowledge and expertise right here to Brisbane.

2024

Simply for Strings Rewards Program

In 2024, we launched the new Simply for Strings Rewards program, giving us another way to thank the wonderful community that has supported us over the years.

The refreshed program introduced new membership tiers, exclusive rewards, birthday gifts, and extra benefits for teachers, making it even easier for customers to earn rewards as they continued their musical journey with us. The program was brought to life through beautiful custom artwork created by Brisbane artist Kim Stockert, whose illustrations were inspired by Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

More than just a loyalty program, Simply for Strings Rewards celebrates the relationships we've built over the years and says thank you to the musicians, educators, schools, and families who continue to support us every day.

Master Made: An Exhibition

In 2024, we partnered with Sydney String Centre to present Master Made, one of the most significant exhibitions of fine string instruments and bows ever showcased in Brisbane.

The exhibition featured an extraordinary collection crafted by some of the world's most celebrated makers, including Vuillaume, Gadda, Degani, Sartory, Lamy, Hill & Sons, Tubbs, and many more. Opening night was brought to life by a beautiful performance from Ensemble Cherubim, creating an unforgettable evening for our local string community.

For many of our customers, it was a rare opportunity to experience and compare instruments of exceptional historical and musical significance. Bringing exhibitions of this calibre to Brisbane reflects our ongoing commitment to making world-class string instruments more accessible to Australia's string community.

Cremona in Australia

Building on the success of Master Made, we were honoured to host the Cremona in Australia exhibition in 2025. In partnership with the Consorzio Liutai "A. Stradivari" Cremona and Sydney String Centre, the exhibition celebrated the artistry and tradition of Cremona, the home of violin making for more than 500 years.

The collection showcased exceptional contemporary instruments crafted by master makers from Cremona, giving Australian musicians the rare opportunity to experience these remarkable instruments without travelling overseas. Opening night featured another beautiful performance by Ensemble Cherubim, bringing each instrument to life through music.

Hosting this exhibition was a privilege and reinforced our commitment to connecting Australian musicians with the very best instruments, makers, and musical experiences from around the world.

Back on the Road

2026

Back on the Road

Twenty years after Anna first packed a Toyota Yaris with instruments and travelled across Queensland, Simply for Strings returned to its roots by getting back on the road.

Working alongside organisations including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, we visited regional communities including Charleville, St George, Goondiwindi, Chinchilla, and Roma. Along the way, we brought the String Garden and Behind the Sound experiences to schools, libraries, and community events, giving more people the opportunity to explore string instruments through hands-on learning.

These regional visits reminded us why Simply for Strings began in the first place: to support musicians wherever they are, strengthen music education, and share the joy of string playing with communities across Queensland.
