Introducing the New Larsen Sovereign Cello Strings
Sovereign Cello Strings are the newest release from Larsen Strings, designed as a high-performance set for professional cellists seeking more colour, greater control and more sound definition.
Larsen describes Sovereign as their most soloistic cello string set to date, developed for professional cellists who want more colour, more control and more definition in sound. These strings promise immediate response and powerful projection, expanding your tonal range from raw grit and dark intensity to lyrical warmth and the lightest pianissimo.
Michael recently had the opportunity to test the Sovereign set on his own 7/8 Jay Haide cello. Here is what he discovered.
First Impressions: Immediate Power and Clarity
One quality stood out immediately, volume.
Everyone who heard the strings during our initial demonstrations noticed the same thing straight away, an impressively large sound with exceptional clarity. The projection is immediate, but what makes it particularly striking is that the sound remains pleasant and focused rather than becoming harsh or forced.
Michael described the experience as having access to an enormous range of volume, from a very easy and clear sotto voce over the fingerboard to what almost feels like an impossible amount of power closer to the bridge.
Dynamic Range: A New Benchmark
Of all the qualities Sovereign offers, the dynamic range may be its most remarkable feature.
Michael described it simply as:
"The greatest dynamic range I have ever encountered in a cello string set."
The strings move effortlessly between delicate and intimate playing and a huge, commanding sound without losing stability or tonal focus. Whether playing at the softest pianissimo or pushing toward full volume, the sound remains controlled and dependable.
Tone Colour and Consistency
The Sovereign strings offer an enjoyable amount of tone colour, although Michael noted that the range of colour is not especially broad. Instead, these strings seem intentionally designed to create a distinct and consistent voice.
They bring out a pleasant, bold character with just a hint of sweetness, maintaining that sound quality across all dynamic levels. One of the most impressive observations was how little the tone changes as you explore different dynamics and where your bow is positioned on the string.
Michael found that the same tone colour heard at fortissimo near the bridge remained reliably present as he moved gradually toward the fingerboard and played at pianissimo.
This consistency extended across all four strings, creating an excellent balance throughout the set. Testing on two different cellos showed similar results.
A Resonant and Refined Sound
The Sovereign strings are rich in overtones, adding colour and complexity without becoming overwhelming.
The overtones resonate clearly and contribute warmth and depth while preserving definition and focus in the sound.
Response and Bow Control
Response was another standout characteristic.
The strings react very quickly and naturally to the bow, making both full legato passages and more delicate, lyrical work feel rewarding. Technical articulation also becomes easier and cleaner.
Michael noted that techniques such as sautille and spiccato felt noticeably more effortless, crisp and controlled.
Playability: Comfort Meets Performance
Comfort and ease of playing were among Michael’s favourite aspects of the Sovereign set.
The strings felt comfortable under the fingers and consistently rewarding to play, regardless of repertoire. Reduced fatigue in both left and right hands was a noticeable benefit.
Michael was particularly impressed by their impact on double stops:
"They seem to make double stops clearer, easier and more beautiful, even when double stopping on the C and G strings."
Even in the lower register there was no muddiness in the sound, with notes blending naturally while retaining definition and clarity.
Final Thoughts
Michael’s overall impression of the Sovereign strings can be summed up in a few words:
Grand. Powerful. Majestic.
The first thing everyone notices is the extraordinary volume, but there is much more beneath the surface. On his cello, Michael found that they produced the largest, richest, clearest and most direct sound he had experienced while still maintaining breadth and warmth.
They can be pushed to immense volume with crisp clarity or encouraged toward a glorious growl when desired. At the same time, they remain capable of producing a sweet and delicate sotto voce.
Perhaps most importantly, they maintain beautiful balance across all four strings while remaining incredibly easy and enjoyable to play.
