Here at Simply for Strings, we love Larsen Cello strings! Each product line offers their own unique qualities suitable for many cellists. Here’s our thoughts on the Larsen Solo line.
Larsen Soloist strings perform at a very high level and are excellent soloist-quality strings. They give a very strong, brilliant tone, yet without any harshness. The A string gives a lovely full sound and still manages to sing sweetly.
One of the most popular string combinations for advanced cellists all over the world, and particularly here in Brisbane, is Larsen Soloist A & D, paired with Spirocore Tungsten G & C. This is simply because many cellists love the raw power furnished by Spirocore Tungsten.
That’s not to say that the Larsen Solo lower strings are bad! Larsen Soloist G and the Larsen C string are certainly not lacking in any way. They also give wonderful high quality performance, with the C offering a clearer tone on some celos than Spirocore.
The ability to mix and match with Larsen Solo Soft, Medium and Strong is helpful in overcoming specific idiosyncrasies in individual cellos. Some of our more advanced cello range is supplied standard with Larsen Soloist A & D, paired with Spirocore Silver G & C for the open, gut-like characteristics offered by the silver-wound lower strings.
The Larsen Soloist set is supplied with Soloist A, D & G with the Larsen Original C string completing the set. Larsen Original C balances beautifully with the other three strings.
All four strings have a Larsen-developed solid steel core. The Soloist A, D & G strings are based on solid steel cores, different in properties and dimensions from their Larsen Original counterparts. The A & D strings are wound with precision rolled flat steel wire and the G & C strings are wound with tungsten. The 4/4 sets are available in Soft, Medium and Strong tensions depending on the needs of you and your instrument. Offered in all three tensions for A, D and G optimised slightly above the Original equivalents.
“With these strings, I feel at home.” Concert cellist, David Geringas.

ABOUT THE CELLO STRING LIBRARY
Simply for Strings has created a trial ‘String Library’ for cellists to visit on appointment and try different string sets and/or combinations, so that we can help with their search for the sound and response they need. Here you can try before you buy, with our guidance and assistance. In this appointment, we’ll have a discussion with you before we start fitting up to three different sets on your cello. We let you trial the strings in-store to determine which strings may suit you and your needs best. And if you need, we can play your cello for you, so you can hear it as both listener and player. It’s an obligation free appointment, all you need to do is bring your cello, and prepare to fall in love with some new strings!
